How the time flies

Friday, December 17th, 2010

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted. I guess I haven’t had a lot to say. I ran for the first time today since the 5k. 15 degrees out and dark! It was just like being in the Army again :)

First 5k coming up

Monday, September 6th, 2010

I’ve been pretty silent about the running lately.  Mostly there hasn’t been much to tell.  I got the poison ivy in some tender places and so running basically stopped until that cleared up.  It’s now clear, and running has resumed.  In fact, I entered a 5k (just to make sure I don’t give up on running!) that takes place on the 20th of this month.

Parenthetically, when I pray, I often tell God that I want to do His will, but that he needs to make His will obvious, ‘cause I’m kind of slow some times.  A couple of weeks ago a guy I work with sends an email out to the whole office advertising this 5k run – it’s a benefit for a 7 month old girl that had to have a heart transplant.  Proceeds from the race go to her medical fund.  It was like a big ol’ “pay attention now, I’m being obvious…” nudge from God.

If you’re in the Springfield, MO area and feel like running a 5k for a good cause on the 20th, here’s the flier for the “Run for the Rockstar” (pdf file).

My running actually resumed about two weeks ago.  Today was a personal record for me in a couple of ways.  I ran further than I’d ever run before – 4 miles.  I wanted to be sure I could actually finish a 5k (yes, I am that out of shape).  It was also the longest time I’d ever run, and I felt pretty good afterwards.  It was a slow run, but was a good confidence booster.

Allena and I have also been doing the South Beach diet thing.  She’s lost almost 15lbs, and I’ve lost almost 10.  Hopefully that coupled with some consistent exercise will help me lose weight!  Starting weight: 282lbs.  Target: 225lbs.  Wish me luck! :)

Week 5 Done

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Well, finally!  I have lost some weight – I’m down to 276 this morning, which is the first time I’ve been in the 270’s since about September of last year.

My running is improving – this week I went for 35 minutes at a time, and ran for 5 minutes / walked for 1.  I only ran twice last week (I’m going to try to run today, hopefully that will work out).  I’m at the point where I *think* I could run a full mile without stopping (gasp!  how amazing!  lol).  Of course, Week 7 calls for running 2 miles.  As I said, I had to step back from the training schedule so that I’m only running 3 times per week instead of 4, to keep my shins from aching.  Week 7 may have to have a week 7a, 7b, and 7c just to build up to that full two miles :)

In other news, William has started using the potty with some consistency – he still goes through several pull-ups per day, but he’s using the potty as often as not.  Woot woot!

Week 4 done

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Ok, this post is a day late and a dollar short :)

Week 4 went pretty well – I ran 3 times.  I’ve determined that I’m going to have to just run 3 days per week because if I don’t get the full day of recovery between runs, my shins start crying like little girls.  I also managed to lose one pound – which is progress at least.

In other news, we got our Suburban running again this week (THANK YOU CHUCK!), and we also had three lambs born on the ranch this weekend – all spotted.  Two rams and one ewe.

Week 1b – not so good

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Week 1 b did not go so well.  I only exercised twice, and I’m back up to 282 lbs.  BUT…I got my MO tax refund, and bought running shoes, and one of my two exercise times actually involved running.

So, next week starts week two of training which will involve running/walking for twenty minutes.  I really kind of splurged on the shoes – in fact they’re the most expensive pair of shoes I’ve ever purchased – but I’m glad as I think they’ll be worth the investment.  I ended up with a pair of Saucony (pronounced sock-o-knee) ProGrid Triumph shoes:

These shoes provide maximum cushioning and shock absorption – something I think I’m going to need ;)

My first run/walk went pretty well.  I walked a minute then ran a minute for twenty minutes or so.  This was a pretty good pace for me (I said for ME! :) I know it’s pathetic!).  I covered two miles, and the last run stint I ran for a little over a minute which left me totally winded with my heart racing.  Still, you have to start somewhere.  My goal for the end of week 2 is to be running in 1.5 – 2 minute stints.  Another goal is to not overeat so much – we had company over last night, with lots of good food…I over did it.
